Ingredient adulteration is a growing problem in the dietary supplement industry. Grape seed extract, elderberry, and boswellia (just to name a few) are three botanicals that have come under scrutiny in recent years for frequently being adulterated with cheap ingredients. The result is supplements that are of low quality and provide little to no health benefit to the consumer.
For example, many grape seed extracts on the market today don’t contain what they claim to or are adulterated with cheaper ingredients like red peanut skins. Peanut skins are dangerous allergens that may cause issues for customers with sensitivities. Due to high demand for elderberry and boswellia, these two ingredients are also seeing an increase in adulterated supply. In fact, a study released by the American Botanical Council showed that elderberry adulteration is rampant in the industry. Of 25 bulk materials that were analyzed, 14 failed the identity test and five samples were found to contain no elderberry extract at all.
Taking Action Against Adulteration
In the presence of this widespread adulteration, the Terry Naturally® brand felt it was necessary to take stringent steps to show how our ingredients are safe, effective, and of the highest quality for our customers. We did this by developing an expanded verification program to confirm that every lot of verified extracts from Terry Naturally is tested to confirm its identity. We then complete additional independent testing that goes beyond standard regulatory requirements.
Finished products are tested using High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). To detect the presence of an adulterant, we compare the raw material to a certified standard. This is done using High Performance Thin Layer Chromatography (HPTLC), which will tell if the raw material has been adulterated based on the separation patterns. All our testing is performed at ISO 17025 certified laboratories to ensure authenticity.
