For many of us, life can feel like a non-stop juggling act. Routine and responsibility are great for giving us a sense of purpose and keeping us moving through our days, but when our to-do lists get too long, we start to feel anxious and exhausted. Our moods and energy levels plummet, our sleep suffers, and our immune health takes a hit.
It’s normal for everyone to feel stressed out from time to time, but when that becomes your primary operating mode, it’s time to make a change.
- You’re constantly busy but feel like you’re not checking anything off your to-do list.
- You feel like everything you do is for other people, with no time or energy for self-care.
- You have a difficult time focusing and enjoying the moment.
- You feel burnt out, stressed, or overwhelmed on a regular basis.
Maintaining a healthy balance in life is key to health and happiness. If you’re feeling out of balance, start with these four simple ideas to regain a sense of calm and connection in your life.
Learn to Say No
If you’re a human being, there’s no way around it—your time and energy are limited. Accept that you can’t do everything! Over committing yourself is a surefire way to throw your life out of balance. Does saying no make you feel guilty? Remember when you say no to certain commitments, you’re actually saying YES to time you need to relax and recharge. Next time your heart isn’t in something, try saying no, then do something you love that you never seem to have time for. It can rejuvenate your body and soul!
Practice Gratitude
Gratitude is good for you! Each morning, find three new things to be grateful for. It’s believed that being thankful in life can improve your mood, productivity, sleep, and immune health. Specifically, showing gratitude for the people in your life can also lead to more meaningful relationships. Research also shows gratitude can trigger the calming part of the nervous system to take over, which decreases cortisol levels and increases feel good hormones in the body. Give thanks and experience a multitude of benefits.
Disconnect
The internet and smart phones have made it all too easy to be too “connected” in the modern age, and the constant pings and alerts from devices can contribute to stress and anxiety. Disconnect for a while each day to give your eyes, brain, and soul a rest. Use this time to relax your mind, take some deep breaths, and nourish a relationship or two—in person. The satisfaction, joy, and contentment you feel from being with people who feed your soul can never be matched by scrolling through Instagram or binge watching the latest Netflix drama.
Pay Attention to Your Health
The best way to bring some balance into your life is to nourish yourself with nutritious foods and healthy exercise habits. But you don’t need to suddenly drop an entire food group or join a 30-day boot camp to take care of yourself. Start small. Grab something nutritious the next time hunger strikes. Remember that a 10-minute walk around the block is better than nothing. Be intentional as you incorporate small, simple steps toward better health into your daily routine, and you’ll soon notice how much better you feel!
