Oops, Is Your Dog Passing Gas? (How embarrassing for the holidays!)

Have you noticed your dog passing gas?
No, not the humans “blaming” it on the dog, but the dog emitting smells that don’t equate with cookies baking and cider simmering! Dog farts are a part of life, but frequency and the “smelly factor” can be downright embarrassing when company comes.

Here are tips to help balance canine intestinal microflora to promote intestinal well-being:

  1. What is your dog eating?
If your dog is fed a food with preservatives and artificial ingredients, it can ferment in the colon and lead to “those smells.” Just like people, canines react to various foods with flatulence. Beware of soybeans, beans, peas, high-fat and spicy foods, and milk products. Have you considered that your dog is lactose intolerant? Many pups are. Grains can also be an issue. You might have to do some experimenting to see what affects your dog by doing an elimination diet. For example, if you are feeding your pet milk products, eliminate them for several weeks and see if there is an improvement in the “smells.”

  2. Other habits…
Is your dog a “gulper,” wolfing down food very quickly, especially after exercise? This can lead to less-than-optimal digestion and gas. Is your dog overweight? If so, their digestive system is probably not very efficient. Does your dog get the proper amount of exercise for his breed and age? All dogs need exercise for proper digestion.

  3. Your breed of dog
Know your dog! Certain breeds, such as flat-faced dogs like bulldogs and pugs, tend to fart more. Why? They take in more air when they drink and eat. What comes in, must go out—and that includes air! It’s not quite clear why other breeds are also known for clearing the room—but the list is long. It includes boxers, beagles, Yorkshire terriers, pit bulls, Doberman pinschers, and golden retrievers.

  4. Help for proper digestion and gut health
Put Probiotic Daily™ from Terry Naturally® Animal Health on your holiday shopping list. It features two powerful probiotics: Bifidobacterium animalis and Bifidobacterium bifidum. Proper digestion and good gut health go a long way in promoting canine intestinal well-being. To help maintain proper gut flora in the digestive tract, assist in absorption of essential nutrients, and balance intestinal microflora—choose Probiotic Daily. It’s perfect for everyday use.

Goodbye smellies, hello cuddles! Make it a happy season for one and all.
