Fa-la-la-WOOF! Canine Holiday Stress!

Dogs are creatures of habit. They love things to stay the same. For most people, that doesn’t describe the holidays. Instead, families are busy and on the edge of happy chaos. While your dog is longing for a silent night, you are probably decking the halls. Here are some things you can do to help your pet have a holly jolly holiday season!

A Season of Eating

Food abounds during the holidays and your dog will be enticed. Don’t give in! Keep to their normal diet and eating routine, and don’t feel guilty about it. You are doing the right thing. Of course you can include a healthy doggie treat as part of your festivities, but don’t feed table scraps from all the holiday fare. Even something you deem as “healthy food” can be harmful. Check out the many available lists online regarding unsafe food for dogs which includes chocolate, grapes, onions, and anything sweetened with xylitol. Your dog’s digestion will be much happier, which will cut down on stress in the long run. You can also skip the “out of the norm” food all together and make their gift a stimulating toy.

All Those People

Does your dog usually like strangers? If the answer is no, there’s no holiday magic that is suddenly going to change their perception. Arrange a safe place for your pet if you are having a party or company. Another tip? Doorbell ringing can be stressful. Either meet people at the door or assign proactive door opening duties to one of your guests. The constant doorbell ringing can add to stress for your pup.

Travel

If you’re travelling and leaving Fido in a boarding situation, explore where they will stay in plenty of time to know the rules of where they are going. Bring along a favorite item like a piece of clothing that smells like home. Include their usual food or water bowl when you bring items to the boarders. Knowing your pet is in a place you trust will cut down on stress for both of you.

Calming Formula

The holidays are a perfect time for Calming Formula™ from Terry Naturally® Animal Health. It’s fast-acting and helps manage normal stress by promoting calmness no matter what’s bothering your pet. That includes things like separation, noise, travel, grooming, and stressful visits. Be ready with Calming Formula on hand to help your best friend relax. A few more tips? Introducing a dog into your family during holiday time is not ideal. Instead, wrap up a picture of a dog or wrap a similar style stuffed animal. Prepare your family, spend some time learning about dogs, and bring the dog into the family at a calm time. Be attentive to your pet’s personality. Will they really enjoy being dressed up as Santa Paws? Make good choices for your precious friend and it will be a season of true joy for all. Fa-la-la-WOOF!
