Can Dogs Have Allergies?

Help for Seasonal Skin Allergies

Just like people, dogs deal with seasonal skin allergies. A dog’s skin quality is an important component of their overall health and contributes to a sound immune system, making skin health vital. Seasonal allergies are a major player in a dog’s skin health and may be triggered by pollen, dust, grass, weeds, mold, fungi, feathers, fleas, and even seasonal dryness.

Does your dog have seasonal allergies?

Look for watery eyes, sneezing, a runny nose, or itchy ears, paws, and other body parts. Dogs may even exhibit a change of character with the change of seasons, which may be a sign they are feeling off due to seasonal allergies.

If any of those things sound familiar, it’s time for you—the pet parent—to act!

Think about your dog’s bathing habits.

How often do you bathe your pet? Once a month is a good standard, unless your dog is smelly or dirty. This schedule will ensure your pet maintains the amount of oil their skin needs to stay healthy. You may have to bathe them more often if allergy triggers are plentiful. You can also remove excess pollen from fur and skin by wiping down your pups’ paws and fur with a moist cloth.

It's also important to choose a hypoallergenic shampoo to remove the allergens your dog has encountered. Make sure you’re using a canine shampoo that is pH balanced for dogs. Human shampoo is not made for a dog’s skin. Also, check to see if your shampoo choice is free from all those things you should avoid in your own shampoo, like parabens and sulphates.

Improve your home environment.

Airborne allergens enter through your door and windows. A good way to cut down on buildup of allergens in your home is to regularly change air filters. Run an air conditioner or dehumidifier to help control mold in susceptible places in your home like the basement, bathroom, and laundry room. It’s also best not to seclude your pet to these areas if they are prone to seasonal allergies. And of course, don’t forget to launder your pet’s bedding on a regular basis!

Support your dog’s sensitive skin with Omega Skincare from Terry Naturally® Animal Health.

Omega Skincare is formulated to support canine skin health with a full spectrum of nutrients from essential fatty acids found in organic plant oils. This includes organic flax, pumpkin, sunflower, and sesame oil plus the addition of cod liver oil. The result is a synergistic strength which includes omega 3, 6, and 9 plus EPA and DHA. These types of fat are not produced in a dog’s body. They can only get them through diet and supplementation. According to the National Animal Supplement Council (NASC), fatty acid supplements can help skin-related issues associated with seasonal allergies. Added daily to one of your dog’s regular meals, Omega Skincare helps maintain the normal moisture content of skin and is an excellent way to support skin during times of seasonal skin allergies.
